Real Wood 2 vs 3 Axbridge Saxons

Match Report: Real Wood 2 vs 3 Axbridge Saxons

10 men went to Frys

Following last week’s 18-man squad that failed to get a game, 10 of us turned up at Frys.
1 of us didn’t.
We had failed to provide a referee and had mistakenly relied on the opposition avoiding the colour clash. So a good start.
However Axbridge with their subs were happy to provide all the officials and Corinthians' shirts came to the rescue.

We were possibly over cautious and Axbridge, 2nd in the league, may have been a little complacent but nevertheless they went in 2 ahead at halftime.

Our good 1st half performance got better and better once we’d conceded a third goal to an excellent 25 yard strike. Relieved of the guilt of wearing the fascist black shirts and determined to show partner, daughter and nephews his true worth, Batty put in a Man-of-the-Match performance to pull back 2 goals and leave the opposition pestering the referee to blow for time. Jimmer hit a great strike against the crossbar but we only ended up with massive amounts of pride, satisfaction and all-round back-slapping wondering what would it have been like with 11 men?

Absolutely brilliant performance! Great passing football even when under great pressure. Swifty was masterful in defence with some tremendous tackles and wise in his captaincy suggesting we change in the second half from 4-4-1 to 3-5-1. This gave us an in penetrable defensive wall of Jack, Swifty & Tom enabling Batty and Rich to give extra width and, in Batty’s case, goals.

Westbury Wanderers 4 vs 6 Real Wood

Westbury Wanderers 4 vs 6 Real Wood
15 of us made the trip to Backwell for our second 3rd division fixture and the hope of getting some points on the board. Everyone looked the part in our new kit and we played an excellent game fully deserving our victory. In the absence of Felix to provide goals, Jimmer stepped up and netted 3 times and generally hassled the opposition defence earning the Man of the Match Award. 2 assists and a goal for new Jim plus having a kit that fits made him another happy bunny. Dan was terrific from the moment he came on and added a goal himself but surely the pick was Les’s angled shot into the roof of the net to finish off a move of probably 100(?) passes which worked triangles from the left back position to the opposition 6-yard box. This was the icing on a tremendous captain’s performance from Les. Special thanks too to Matt Pat who despite a genuine case of man-flu turned in another fabulous performance. There were excellent performances throughout but it’s also worth mentioning the 2nd half marking job Tom did on the opposition’s danger man which greatly weakened their goal threat and when it came Louis was also on great form batting away everything and then terrifying us all with his penalty area antics. A great win

(Obviously the down side of having an ample squad means that sometimes some of us don’t get on the pitch as much as we’d like. We were better at rotating the substitutes this week but can improve especially by people saying when they are blowing a bit and feel we could use some fresh legs. The upside was we had more men than the opposition and looked strong and resilient at the end despite Westbury throwing everything at getting something from the game.)

New Kit

What the best dressed footballers are wearing this season.

Farmhouse Nailsea 3 Real Wood 2

Beaten in the last minute after another excellent display. Goals from new-signing Gaz and Felix. Goal-line technology in the form of Bertie & Tom causes a dispute and disallowed goals made for an exciting match. In the end we felt disappointed to have a draw snatched from us with only moments to go but to as Les pointed out to put up such a good fight against the team that beat us 5-0 last season shows how far we have come. Excellent performances by Tom, Gaz and new-Tom and by battle-scarred Matt Pat and Captain Les in midfield but Man-of-the-Match goes to Louis for some tremendous goalkeeping. Thanks to Raja and Bertie's latest toyboy, Ollie for helping us out. Despite not picking up any points we played some excellent passing football and (again as Les pointed out) we were able to do it even when under pressure and pass our way out of trouble. We can look forward optimistically to the season ahead.

Re-branding

The discussion about a new kit has inspired Mark to suggest rebranding ie renaming our team (don't know how well this will go down with the league secretary who's been beavering away on the new website but that's his problem).
Real Sociedad = Real Sociopath or Real Social-Dad
Real Zaragosa = Real 'ave-a-go-Sir

Real Valladolid- Real Invalid

Any thoughts?

This website http://www.oldfootballshirts.com/en/teams/r/ will give you the names of lots of 'Real' team names for those of you wanting inspiration.

Rich

Response from Andy:
The best thing about playing (occasionally) for Real Madras was telling people who you played for.  It almost always raised a smile (apart from my wife who doesn't do football).
Anyway Real Wood does not, unfortunately inspire any such reaction, so I'm all in favour of injecting a bit of long-lost humour back into the name.

I think there's one obvious choice.  We all agree that we must move with the times and keep the name fresh and relevant.

So, on that basis I recommend Real Chennai.

For those of you not geographically inclined; Madras changed its name to Chennai in 1996.  Sadly many of the Indian restaurants in and around Bristol have not yet reacted to this change although I for one would happily order a Chicken or Prawn Chennai.  I'm sure the Redland Tandoori could be persuaded to reprint their menus.  After all, we put enough business their way.

Response from Tom:
Really states
Real stationary

Swifty's view:
Don't really have a view on the rebranding although the Iberian Peninsula does throw up a few possibilities...

Sporting Lesbian
Benfaeca
Espamroll
Real Bettys...

AGM July 2014

Real Wood FC AGM
Thursday 3rd July, 7:30-8:30 @ Goals Brislington

Present: Carl, Mark, Will, Rich, Jim, Jimmer, Les, Felix, Swifty, Tom, Jack

Rich went through brief highlights of the season.
Presentations: Felix – Golden Boot for top scorer and Tom unanimously voted as Player of the Year. (pics asap).
Les went through the finances and we discussed;
·         Charity donation – agreed £100 to St Peter’s Hospice for the help and support they gave to Carly & Colin. Les will liaise with Colin.
·         Medals to award for achieving promotion to be looked into by Jim.
·         New kit. Agreed that we would move away from any connection with Franco’s Real Madrid and links to other ‘Real’ clubs suggested. Rich’s favourite Real Sociedad though any similarity to Huddersfield Town is purely coincidental.
·         Agreed £20 annual subs which some people paid please can you get your money to Les if you haven’t. Also agreed £6 match subs for 11-a-side and 5-a-side matches. We hope to continue using the referees we have been using which obviously incurs costs but everyone felt it is worth it.
Jack gave an overview of his strategic plan for Henleaze Corinthians (Div 3), Voyager (new over 45s Division) and Real Wood (Div 3).

Lots of mutual appreciation.

Thanks everyone for attending or sending votes for Player of the Season.
Curry Cup 25th July will include presentation of promotion medals.
